Greater efficiency with multiplexing. General rules applicable to most traffic streams are usually true for data transmissions
as well: Currently operating network components and structures should be utilized fully and efficiently to provide further cost reductions. The multiplexing process is an excellent
solution for the optimization of the capacity parameters of fiber optic and copper networks and hence significant cost reductions.
The key parameter criterion for the determination and evaluation
of fiber optic applications is great line and transmission capacity. In point-to-point connections set up with integrated fiber optic modems, only one signal is transmitted across a single fiber. However, the application of multiplexers – solutions
used for aggregating (pooling) several signals and their subsequent joint transmission across transparent media – should result in the reduction of costs related to fiber optic cables and in improved efficiency parameters of previously set-up networks.
In the course of multiplexing, the data received are converted into higher bit rate streams, and subsequently transmitted via copper or fiber optic cables. This organization scheme ensures that data receive from different sources (central computer
units, carrier backbone systems) and data transmitted via various protocols (ESCON, SDH, SONET, ATM, IP) may be transmitted simultaneously via a single connecting cable. In input/output devices, optical signals will be reconverted, i.e. the original data formats will be retrieved. Then, such signals will be transmittable via copper or optical fiber lines. The implementation of such solutions should bring about a significant
reduction of general network operation and maintenance costs. Today the connection of different network types like SDH or IP becomes more and more important
