Connectivity: the art of converting, adapting, and transwithting data

One of the main tasks of telecommunication companies and providers is connecting consumers to the transmission networks of providers of voice and data services. All of these companies have to react to the different requirements of their customers flexibly and have to be able to provide services without running up high costs. When making connections to the backbone networks (SDH/PDH networks, IP/Ethernet-based networks), network operators have to deal with all kinds of network topologies. And the data types that have to be transwithted are just as multifarious: from simple voice signals to the data-intensive applications of Internet service providers, large companies, banks and insurance companies.
Depending on the application, there are also all kinds of data coding that have to be transwithted across a backbone network.

There are different kinds of conversions: from electrical to electrical,
from optical to optical or from electrical to optical:

Level adaption (from one standard to another, such as X.21 to G.703)
Mechanical adaption (Connections from one plug connection to another)
Conversion of data rates
Conversion of data coding

Special optical/optical and electrical/optical:

Conversion of wavelength,
Conversion of fiber optic plugs and fiber type
Expansion of transmission ranges

In addition to electrical/electrical signal matching, the electrical/optical and the optical/optical fields are two of Pandatel’s main areas, with a multitude of solutions. Although transmissions via fiber optic lines are much faster and have much greater capacity than via copper lines, copper lines are still in use for the data transmission. Copper networks are currently dominant in the “last mile” from the
telephone company’s network to the consumer. As investments in new infrastructures are extremely expensive, there is a need for solutions that use the existing network structures and interfaces between the networks more efficiently. Copper lines can be connected to backbone lines with converters and modems. Thus, the adaptation, conversion, and support of various bit rates and interfaces
ensure simple network access.

  Why Pandatel?

Our products and expertise for connectivity solutions.

The modular structure of Pandatel products and the handling of various media such as optical fibers and copper are the main advantages that our products offer. But the possibility of support for various protocols, which allows Pandatel's products to work as interfaces, has also proved to be a strong point of our products. In this manner, existing infrastructures can be used efficiently, and no new lines or additional bandwidths need be rented or created.

Pandatel offers its broad spectrum of products for data telecommunication for the conversion, transmission, and pooling of data. Pandatel's products can process data streams up to 2.5 Gbps.

Pandatel offers software for the management of the solution installed so that you have control of everything; almost all of our products are equipped with management functionality. The user-friendly user interface in the PAGRIS software facilitates the work of network administrators, thus saving money for the operation of the network.

1. GSM application with fiber optic modems in Malaysia

The Problem: Maxis, one of the largest mobile phone network companies in Malaysia, installed BTSs (base transceiver stations) all over the country to cover its mobile network. Some of these BTSs were installed in street boxes many kilometers away from the BSC (base station controller). These BTSs transwith digital audio data back to the BSC via an SDH network. A solution was needed to allow flexible transmission access for connections of the BTSs to the BSC via optical fiber.

The Solution: Pandatel’s fiber optic modem FL-P, with a transmission range of up to 85km, was used to convert the digital audio data from the BTSs to a fiber optic signal for transmission towards the BSC. The FL-P was used in combination with the single slot housing RA-T for the street boxes. Thus, the same rack cards as at the central headquarter can be used. At the headquarter, the rack cards are operated in a 19'' rack. All devices are controlled via a central SNMP management.

The Benefits: The selection of the optimal fiber optic interface allows various distances to be covered inexpensively between the BTSs and the BSC. The FL-P with its expanded temperature range especially fulfils the high demands of this application. The costs for spare parts are low as the units used in the single slot housings in the street boxes and in the central rack are identical.

2. Point-to-point transmission solution for banks in Singapore

The Problem: A leading telecommunication company in Singapore offers its customers from the banking sector a direct connection to their data centers. The banks have to maintain double data centers for their transactions. One of these centers works as the primary center, the other as a backup. The two data centers, which are some ten kilometers apart, are to be connected via dark fiber. Another dark fiber serves as the backup connection. In the future, the connection
between the data centers could be upgraded from 100 Mbps to 1000 Mbps to allow a more efficient use of the lines.

The Solution: At the headquarter, Pandatel’s Ethernet converter ET-CM converts the Ethernet data into optical signals that are directly fed into the high-speed fiber optic ITU converter FX-IG. In the backup center, another pair of ET-CM and FX-IG are converting the signals back to Ethernet data. The same configuration is used to set up the redundant connection.

The Benefits: ET-CM has a simple troubleshooting system with loopbacks, RFD and LPT features. The optical performance of FX-IG with a budget of up to 30dB can transwith data over distances up to 100 km and is thus ideal for high-loss, fiber optic cables, like dark fiber in this case. All of the devices used can be controlled via SNMP from a central headquarter. The introduction of the ET-CG, a 10/100/1000 Mbps Ethernet converter, can increase the bandwidth to 1000 Mbps if necessary.

3. Long distance connection within China

The Problem: Long distance connection within China Two switches several hundred kilometers apart have to be connected with optical fiber for a project in Hangzhou, China. Amplifying repeater stations can be used every 70-80 kilometers for the installation of fiber optic repeaters. The data transmission runs in the STM-
4 mode.

The Solution: Pandatel’s fiber optic repeater FX-R, which runs in the STM-4 mode, is used between the switches as repeater. Thus, the required distances can be bridged. The switches are linked to the FX-R via the optical interface. The FX-R’s line connection is configured with a 1550 nm SM DFB power laser. In each repeater station, the FX-R is configured with a 1550 nm SM DFB power laser, both, on the user interface and on the line interface.

The Benefits: The FX-R can transwith optical signals up to 85 km without having to regenerate the signal thanks to the 1550 nm SM DFB power laser. Both, the user interface port and line interface port, can be configured with various types of fiber optics to provide the desired range. SNMP allows the central management of all units.

4. Point-to-point application for the connection of an international
gateway to a data exchange point in Vietnam

The Problem: A connection was to be made between two Cisco Internet routers in Singapore and Hanoi. In Hanoi, Vietnam, a point-to-point fiber optic connection was required between the Cisco router and the international gateway with its T3 backbone. The Internet router’s data interface operates according to the HSSI standard, the international gateway according to the T3 standard.

The Solution: A pair of Pandatel’s fiber optic modems FL-H and FL-E provides the point-to-point connection between the international gateway and the router. The FL-H converts the data from the Internet router’s HSSI interface into an optical signal that can be transwithted via an optical fiber. At the international gateway, another FL-E is converting the optical signal back into an electric signal that is transwithted via the international gateway at T3 speed.

The Benefits: For transmission distances of up to 80 km, FL-H and FL-E can be configured with the optimal fiber optics to bridge the desired distance. Optical fiber modems can be used as rack mount cards or stand alone units with the single slot housing RA-T. SNMP allows the central management of all units.
