Data Storage & Disaster Recovery - Transmitting and Permanently Storing Large Amounts of Data

Today, not only telephone companies, banks and insurance firms, but also large companies and public authorities work with a large amounts of data that has to be constantly available at different locations. Quick access to customer data from various places has to be possible any time, and the security of critical data is of the highest priority for companies.

Often, a flexible storage concept is used and all of the important components designed redundantly to ensure the availability of the data. The data are mirrored onto physically separate, remote hard drive systems, with the data exchanged via the storage area network (SAN). A disaster recovery system ensures that data are never lost and that work can continue without delay even if there is a failure or catastrophe.

In this age of e-business and the resulting, comprehensive process chains, companies and public authorities need modern storage technology, such as SANs, more than ever. Interactive Web services that automatically access the business data of the back-end will only increase the desire for constantly available data in the near future.

  Why Pandatel?

Solutions with Pandatel products.

Pandatel's multiplexer solutions in theYUMIX series support all requirements for storage networks. Thanks to their flexible, modular design, YUMIX systems can be used in all kinds of applications and expanded - even during operation - to include additional channels. Integrated management functions for monitoring, control, and remote maintenance ensure maximum security for the system.

Pandatel's YUMIX products are very cost-effective and offer great investment security. They thus make an essential contribution to the operational reliability of telecommunications systems. In this manner, the continuation of business operation is ensured.

Transmission of large amounts of data in a SAN application

Pandatel's products allow data to be transwithted over optical fibers. Pandatel's high-performance YUMIX systems are able to bundle large amounts of data and transwith them over one line. For instance, the ESCON standard, which is widely used in the field of SANs and allows for the transmission of up to 200 Mbps, is used in most storage solutions. Thus, up to 256 applications can be bundled for transmission on one fiber, which itself can be redundant to ensure utmost security.

Reference projects

1. Project with a north-German publisher: transmission of a large amount of layout data to print a newspaper

The Problem: A north-German publisher is switching to electronic data processing. Secure, trouble-free transmission at a fast rate is important here. In addition, the data are to be processed in a data center instead of at the publisher's own offices. Up to 600 GB of data are to be transwithted to the printer every evening. The distances to be bridged were as much as 65km. The leased dark fiber, which could be used without restrictions, was to be fully exploited.

The Solution: Pandatel's YUMIX system allowed a scalable solution to be set up that could process both small and large data rates. At peak times, several gigabytes of data can be transwithted. Furthermore, the new solution does not affect the current configuration. Pandatel's products were also able to perform the back-up function, and an existing LAN application was blended directly into the ATM network.

The Benefits: The publisher was able to outsource its data processing completely and is now also very well equipped for any expansions that might be made in the next few years. The dark fiber already in place was fully utilized. Back-up functionality was also ensured so that a complete edition of the newspaper can always be printed. The new system was installed within a few hours thanks to the partner's professional preparation.

2. Project with a Scandinavian insurance firm: Infrastructure expansion

The Problem: IBM S/390 mainframes were to be connected and support provided for ESCON interfaces (200 Mbps), Fibre Channel (here 2.125 Gbps), and Coupling Link (2.125 Gbps). The infrastructure was to be expanded for disaster recovery with mirroring and data back-ups, high transmission security, and minimal downtime. Likewise, the solution had to work for many different protocols (connection of UNIX and Windows environments).

The Solution: To make the transmission technology as straightforward as possible, both DWDM systems and TDM multiplexers are used. To optimize transmission security, optical backup switches are used (dual routing). The SNMP management platform ensures the distributed diagnostics functionality and the option of remote configuration, maintenance and diagnostics.

The Benefits: The decisive factor for the use of Pandatel's TDM and DWDM systems are the scalability of the system, complete redundancy, and certification for SRDF and other SAN applications. In addition, the expertise of local contacts was important. High performance with little maintenance is ensured, and the latest technologies (coupling link, 2.125 Gbps Fibre Channel, etc.) are supported. Compatibility with the management platform already used also played a crucial role.

3. Project with a Scandinavian construction firm Redundant data transmission between branch offices

The Problem: A redundant solution was to be set up to ensure that data can be transwithted from one branch office to the other. But most importantly, the systems used had to interoperate with other systems. The performance was not to drop more than 10%. The system was to be ready for future extensions, thus providing high investment security. Likewise, local 24/7 support was required; it was to be provided by a local partner.

The Solution: An infrastructure that is tolerant of errors was implemented for the constant continuation of activities with SANs connected over long distances. A minor investment in fiber-optic technology was required, and the system was easily integrated in the current infrastructure. The modular, costeffective solution with a YUMIX system allows for future extensions and upgrades. In addition, a partner provides reliable 24/7 support when necessary.

The Benefits: The solution had a long list of certifications. If an error occurs, the redundant fiber-optic line immediately takes over data transmission without any complications. This procedure was tested, and it proved to work without any problems. The goal of a maximum performance loss of 10% on the longest fiber was fallen short of by a wide margin: 7%. The basis for the infrastructure has been created, and it offers enough space for extensions when the company's infrastructure grows.

4. Project with a Finnish network operator Connection of locations in the backbone

The Problem: Two locations in a network operators backbone were to be connected. In addition to the data in the backbone, internal data were to be backed up via this connection in a distributed fashion. The following interfaces had to be supported: Fibre Channel (here 1.0625 Gbps), Gigabit Ethernet (1.25 Gbps), double gigabit Ethernet (2.5 Gbps) for future extensions, and double Fibre Channel (2.125 Gbps), also for extensions. The data in the backbone are to be optically separated from the operator's internal data during transmission. Furthermore, great store was placed on the future extensibility of the distributed, and hence extremely important connection.

The Solution: To make the transmission technology as straightforward as possible, DWDM systems, TDM multiplexers, and channel cards are used. The planned extension to 2.125 or 2.5 Gbps is already possible with the channel cards.

The Benefits: The scalability and future extensibility of Pandatel AG's TDM and DWDM systems were decisive in the company's decision to use them. Expert local contacts supported during installation in the existing management platform.
